Here's my friend Robb with his perplexed expression, so funny.
He doesn't get my organic art. He likes realistic art.
Art is such a personal thing isn't it?
I see it reflects the history you've lived.
The things you have seen and that meant something in your life.

When I was a little girl my Mom was a huge supporter of the Arts. She use to drag me out of the pool, to run to a gallery show or museum.
I'd grudgingly go, wet green hair, and all, grumbling all the way.

After awhile, I got use to being dragged off and actually started loving looking at art with my Mom. It was an amazing special bond we shared with each other. Isn't that why  we are drawn to certain people? We are able to share our innermost thoughts and feeling with certain people in our lives, and oh how lucky I was to have Betsy as my Mom. Not only was she one of the first women executives I knew, but she also taught me really important things like how to hail a cab in busy Manhattan, or how to dial room service at the Plaza, or where the painting of Heloise was hidden there in the lobby. She'd asked me questions while we looked at art, she really engaged me with the whole experience of seeing and looking at different artists. She actually seemed really interested in my opinion, which was way cool for a kid to feel that parental respect. She gave me stregth in my vision, my opinions, and my abilities to voice them out loud to her. It was an amazing time to be a kid, with her, and in the enormity that was the L.A. Art Museum, the Guggenheim, or at the NY Metropolitan.

I was always in awe of her "Mom" abilities, her taste and knowledge of art, and her capabilities as a sweet kind loving person, and her ability to always laugh. This show is for you Mom......I know you are so proud of me.

What a nice tribute this is! I think now matter what type of art one likes, having someone introduce it to you, and be available for discussion is such a valuable thing. My Mother was an artist...watercolor, oil, clay, sewing, set design, cooking..and served to set a great example of the act of creation as well as observation. She is a hard act to follow, but I treasure her legacy in my finding a world of beauty out there free for the act of seeing, and occasionally being able to offer something of my own. There is no greater gift to a scary world than helping someone discover the arts.
