My inspiration? Sea glass, sea grasses, the piles of kelp on the beach, sand, current flows, sea urchins, water colorations, growth of all kinds, Broad Beach, Liquitex inks, the beastly weather, and the Great Barrier Reef.
I'm obsessed with the "Organiks" series I'm doing. Can't help but take a closer look into nature in the Spring. Everything is sprouting and baby green, fresh, and new.
The unseasonable Santa Ana winds returned last week, just as the crops were beginning to peek their heads to the sun. I walk by the neighbors land every morning, a big vegetable garden growing down the street. I felt so bad for him when those winds came, and it was 97 degrees in Malibu....unheard of. He grows the best strawberries in the world. The heat just basted those delicate young plants, they lay wilted, and scorched in the ground. The wind then dries out the soul....think baking flour in the desert. Everything was dust. I saw the farmer the next morning kneeling in the garden trying to give some love to the fatality of the field. Then I happened to think about all the other farmers across this country trying their best against floods, cold, all the terrible things they have to deal with to get food to market. It's a tough job. This summer try growing just a small patch, or even maybe your over watered front yard. You'll see how much work you have to put in. It will give you an amazing sense of what our farmers have to go through. You will get such joy going out to the garden to see whats for dinner tonight, cut down your grocery bill, and maybe lose a few pounds while digging in the garden. I think it's extremely good for the soul, calming after a day of sometimes uber hectic work, and gets us in touch with our beautiful Earth. Your garden will make you feel proud of your accomplishments...... Gardens will always pay back when loved.
