The warmth of summer, the scent of flowers fresh from the heat of the day. Moisture from the rain, sprinkles of goodness make my garden rich for fairies & frogs.

I think one of the most important things you can do when drawing a family member is to not get too crazy. Haaaa Well, what I mean by that unless you are a portrait specialist, your sketch will probably not look exactly like your family member. You just need to look for things that are special to this one person, that sets them apart. This is my daughter, not exact, but an essence of her. The tell tale signs, hair, coloring, posture etc. If you aim for those little "extra" things that make a person an individual you will get close to that essence you're looking for. You get the essence, and you've captured something. It could be so simple, maybe the freckles, or hair that are dead giveaways. Look for something unique to that person, it might even be a larger nose as with the case of my husband, (see below) sorry love....but true. Those little defining twists are what make a person unique into themselves. I used my Lamy Safari fine point pen, I really love that pen. And then added some color with my mini Koi watercolor set. Love this little travel set, you can take it anywhere. It's kind of exaggerated here, ( the nose) but you can tell it's definitely him. The mustache and go-T help also in defining him. To catch the essence of a person sometimes is easier if you don't know them, because you see it immediately. Sometimes if you just meet someone something stands out that otherwise might just become a part of them down the road.
YOU are the one that notices differences because you are really looking at them. Once you get to know someone you don't scrutinize their faces like you do a stranger. So I think the key is if you want to become a better sketcher....scrutinize everything! Really look at things , pull them apart with your eyes, and look for the essence. I've always loved watching people, as far back as I can remember. We use to sit in the European train stations and watch people bustling by busy to find their platforms, and late for trains, dragging children, and bags. I loved doing that, it gave you a glimpse of peoples lives, and actually made YOU feel alive in the world.
So now we live in Hawaii and wow, is Waikiki interesting. People from all over the world come to visit this world famous iconic beach. Most tourists head to the beach immediately, making Waikiki their first stop. I want to do a study of urban sketches in prep for a series of paintings I will attempt. I get the opportunity to watch them for a bit, to see what the story is. The two Japanese couples above are obviously newlyweds ( at least this is the story I have made up about them). Interesting story is I had a cab driver tell me that a lot of Japanese tourists work so hard all year, then they come to Hawaii to shop and have a huge bonus to spend...hence the shopping bags we see in the pic. Waikiki has now been turned into a Designer Shopping paradise, Kalakaua the main street, currently looks like Rodeo Dr.....it is terrible! I hate that they have done that to Waikiki, part of the charm of old Waikiki is gone. I guess it started with my love of books. Then it was because I love, love, love pens and ink. I guess these are excuses...I just love drawing. I haven't just sat and drawn for a very long time.
Drawing takes practice, you get out of practice and you see my drawing has suffered. I do promise to draw everyday. I know I'll get better and better. I'm going to read about drawing, do it , and watch it on You Tube. As usual, I become obsessed, and will throw my big self into it. I plan on getting better and better and developing a certain style, just wait I'll keep you posted. # art #drawing #urbansketchers #USk #penandink #debhaugen |
